Details of Goethe's A2 exam
The German A2 exam pattern is quite simple. As it is a language, there are 4 modules – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. It is a 60 point exam and you need to score a minimum of 36 points (60%) to pass the exam.
What does the Goethe A2 exam cover?
The A2 exam consists of 4 modules or parts, 15 points each, totaling 60 points.
- hearing
- Reading (Lesen)
- writing
- Talking
Note- Don't forget to watch the videos on our You Tube channel. I have solved for you an example of an A2 questionnaire from the Goethe Institut. Read the blog first, it will make it easier for you to understand.
Let's talk about these four modules in detail now-
1. Listening module - Time - 30 min, Points - 20
There are four parts (Teil) in the listening module.
Part 1 (5 dialogues, played twice) –5 points for 5 questions – multiple choice type.
Part 2 (1 dialogue, played once) –5 points for 5 questions – match the pictures.
Part 3 (5 dialogues, played once) –5 points for 5 questions – multiple choice type.
Part 4 (1 dialogue, played twice) –5 points for 5 questions – Yes/No (True/False)
Let's see in detail-
Part 1 (Part 1)– 5 points
This consists of5 questions (1-5)and there will be 5 audio-dialogues. You will have a question and there will be 3 options - A, B and C. All 5 audios areplayed twice. You have enough time to understand the question and select your answer. If you listen carefully, you can easily find the answers. Be sure to read the question and options before the audio starts. See image below.
Part 2 (Part 2)– 5 points
Here you hear only one audio for all 5 questions (6-10). It consists of 5 elements and 9 images. You have to listen to the audio and match the images with the elements (eg Activity Days). One image will match the example and the remaining images will have no elements to match. The audio is primarily a conversation between two people and will playonly once. In the sample question below, you must match activities to days. In the image you see only 6 images but there will be 3 more below (a, b,…. up to i). Note that the number '0' is an example.
Part 3 (Part 3)– 5 points
You will be given 5 questions (11 to 15) and 5 audios here and again there will be options A, B, C for each question. Here the options will be the images. You have to listen to the audio carefully and select the answer. Every audio here isI played only once.
Part 2 (Part 2)– 5 points
Here you hear only one audio (an interview) for all 5 questions (16-20). This consists of 5 affirmations. You have to listen to the audio and decide whether the statement is true (select - Yes) or false (select - No). The audio is primarily a conversation/interview and will playtwice. Note that the number '0' is an example.
- Reading module (Lesen) of the Goethe A2 exam - 30 minutes, 20 points
Again, there are 4 parts of the reading module.

Part 1 (write an SMS)
Part 2 (letter/email writing)
Let's see in detail.
Part 1 (Part 1) – Writing SMS
You have to write an SMS to your friend, colleague, to someone from your family. The exact situation will be provided in the question. You have to understand and write an SMS accordingly. Three points will also be mentioned in the question. Be sure to include all these points in your SMS. Here you are not expected to write complete sentences with proper grammar. It should be a short SMS with enough information. The maximum word limit will be 30.
Part 2 (Teil 2) – Email Writing
You will be given a topic to write a letter or an email. Mostly it will be formal. With the theme, you also get three points that you must include in the letter. Write about 6-7 lines (about 40 words) at the three points indicated. As this is an email/letter, you are expected to write grammatically correct sentences. Try to use 2-3 A-2 grammar points.
